SUMMARY:Acrylics and Oils - Painting Momentum with Anna George _Tuesdays _ 1-4pm _ Jan 7 through Feb 25 _ Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Acrylics and Oils – Painting Momentum w/Anna George \nTuesdays 1-4\nStudio 1\nJan 7 through Feb 25\n8 weeks\nStudio 1\n$165 \nEver dreamed of capturing the world in vibrant oils or acrylics? Whether you’re just starting out or ready to take your painting to the next level\, this mixed-level class welcomes both beginners and intermediate painters to explore these versatile mediums. I believe that painting should bring joy first and foremost. \n“Paint what you love\,” I’ve said many times as I help each student find direction and develop style. I will guide you through techniques you need\, from basic color mixing\, atmospheric perspective\, and composition to more advanced ones like glazing and impasto. My step-by-step approach using demonstrations ensures that beginners feel confident while intermediate painters can push their boundaries and develop their unique style. Frequently I hear requests for help in painting more loosely\, so I present ways to do move in that direction. \nThe real magic happens when our diverse group of painters comes together. You’ll find yourself part of a warm\, supportive community where friendships open up alongside artistic skills. Students have said  “the three hours fly.” Often they share tips\, celebrate each other’s progress\, and “enjoy Anna’s entertaining stories.” A number of  painters have been coming back for years –not just for the instruction\, but for the exceptional camaraderie\, and they share that warmly with new class members. \nI’ve offered classes for thirteen years at Rossmoor\, and I exhibit nearby; abstract and representational work includes paintings\, monoprints\, collage\, and silk. See annageorgeartist.com and annageorgeonline.com. \nJoin us in Studio 1. All skill levels are welcome. A basic supplies list is available for new painters. Join the RAA for $10\, then register for the class. Non-residents please call me for extra details 925 783 9000. Quality ingredients make all the difference. Reserve your easel spot soon. Early registration is recommended.

SUMMARY:Nature Drawing Fundamentals _ with Afsaneh Michaels _ Jan 8- Feb 19 _ Wed_ 9:30-12:30 _Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Nature Drawing Fundamentals \nJanuary 8- February 19 \, 2025 \nWednesdays  9:30-12:30 \nStudio 1 \n Nature drawing has a way of bringing your body and soul in synch with nature and helps you stay in the calm and quiet of the moment. Drawing concentrates your mind and helps you see the world in a new way. In nature drawing you can bring natural things into your home\, on vacation\, outdoors with friends\, anywhere you wish with just a small sketchbook and some pencils. \nWe learn the fundamentals of drawing and visual thinking in a detailed and methodical way over several weeks with a lot practice and attention from the instructor. You will learn about form\, shading\, line weight\, and composition and make lively\, interesting and beautiful drawings. A wide range of materials and mediums are gradually introduced along with demonstrations. \nIn my classes we work together in a cohesive environment\, without judgement where you get to see and appreciate a variety of art and inspire each other. You draw as beginners\, intermediate students\, and more experienced students all in one class\, each group working on material appropriate to their group\, overlaps are encouraged among the various levels. \nBeginners learn the basics of form\, line and value/shading and learn to draw branches\, leaves\, small flowers\, fruits or vegetable\, and an animal\, bird or insect. At the end of class you’ll have at least one drawing with three or four components and probably more. Beginners come to the first class half an hour early to meet and greet and to get the beginner materials. \nIntermediate students draw more complex scenery or a still life with natural elements in it\, perhaps work on a series and learn to use color (optional) with colored pencils\, pastels\, or watercolor. SUMMARY:Art Talk -Japanese Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION:JAPANESE AESTHETICS\nExploring Japan’s Artistic Sensibilities\nRossmoorart Art Talk\nPeacock Hall/Theatre \nWhat makes Japanese art so unique? What is the Japanese Aesthetic? \nGold screens\, woodblock prints\, elegant kimono\, intricate netsukes – art forms that are iconically Japanese. But there is so much more to Japanese art\, which goes back over seven thousand years. Art\, in its myriad forms\, illustrates the historical\, cultural and religious context that exemplifies Japanese sensibilities. \nFor the Japanese the functionality of an object was not enough; it also had to be aesthetically pleasing. The art displayed the skill of the artisan\, the taste of the patron\, and the values of the culture. A Samurai’s sword had to be not only sharp but it also beautifully made\, with an elegant sheath. Screens were not just room dividers; they served to set the tone of a room\, and were frequently used to illustrate family lineage and importance. Woodblock prints made art available and affordable to all\, underscoring the Japanese love of beauty. The concept of “mah” or empty space permeates Japanese art and contributes to its minimalistic elements. \nJoin Dr. Mary Mead\, a Docent at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco\, in exploring the variety\, complexity\, and beauty of Japanese art. Luxuriate in this fascinating program which highlights some of the exquisite objects from the Asian’s Japanese collection. \nMary Mead was born and raised in Japan\, which instilled in her a love of the Far East – its diverse cultures\, arts\, and religions. After a start as a high school teacher she spent 20 years in the telecommunications business\, and then returned to teaching\, this time at the university level. She taught world and comparative religions classes at various colleges and universities before retiring. \nMary holds a PhD and five Masters Degrees. She has been a docent at the Asian Art Museum for over ten years\, and is currently Chair of the Docent Council. She has also been Chair of the Members Evaluation Committee\, and Chair of the Community Speakers Program.

This group produces several drawings\, some in color and some in graphite or charcoal pencil. \nMore advanced students work with scale\, perspective\, tonal variation and more detail and color and scale. A recent group of students made a series from four different flowers. \nWe will use pencils\, charcoal\, colored pencils\, pens\, or pastels and to lesser extent watercolor ( always combined with pencils or pens). Great emphasis is on drawing real specimens and not necessarily working from photos. Small things are brought in to the studio or from your home as models. \nPlease come with your materials or at least a sketchbook and some pencils to the first class and learn about materials then. \nInstructor: Afsaneh Michaels  AfsanehAm@gmail.com \nDates: January 8- February 19\, 2025 \nWednesdays: 9:30- 12:30 \nClass Fee: $210.00 Members.   $230.00 Non-members \nPlace: studio 1 \nNumber of students: 18 \nMaterials: Sketchbook: 93-120 Ibs. weight of your choice.
