DESCRIPTION:“WATERCOLORS When Less Is More”\nFriday 1-4pm\n\nJan    5   –   Feb   23\n8 weeks\n\nStudio 2\n$155/175\n\n\n\nIf you’ve ever thought to try watercolors or pick up where you left off\, and wish for personal attention as you paint\, this  class for you. At the outset we will pursue an understanding of materials and tools in order to develop strokes and washes. Using simple shapes and techniques to learn how the brush loads and carries water and pigments\, we’ll be feeling the difference of “less is more”. Students will be able to complete a number of studies and paintings in this eight-week series.\n \nYears ago I did a thesis on watercolor. I then traveled for a year outside the US. The images I brought home were watercolor only\, no camera at all. This was my medium for decades. Recently my watercolor work has been on silk as well as cold-pressed Arches paper. I will include a silk demo to introduce the silk superflow\, and students can opt to give it a try. \n \nYes\, watercolor painting can be simple\, fun\, and elegant. Join the RAA for $10\, then register for the class.  Quality ingredients make all the difference. Winsor & Newton Pro\, Daniel Smith\, Schminke. One can start with a handful of select pigments and brushes\, plus Arches cold-pressed papers. Call me for extra details (925) 783 9000. Welcome aboard\, see you in the bright and shiny new year!

SUMMARY:“Painting Momentum” with Anna George_ Nov 7 - Dec 26_ Tuesdays_ 1-4_ Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:“Painting Momentum” \nAnna George \nNov 7 – Dec 26 \n$180 for members—- $200 for non-member or non-resident \nStudio 1    Tuesdays     1-4 \nSurround yourself with ideas\, ambient light\, and your painting tools! Whether you’re a beginner or hold an MFA\, we take a fresh look together at fundamentals. My style is to offer you constant support at your easels\, where you are painting what you love. \nAre you a brand-new artist? Are you starting a new painting or revisiting a piece? Whether abstract or representational\, work your individual style in oils or acrylics. (Water-colorists also join this series.) Try fresh ideas. Skirt common pitfalls in this convivial class that has run for eleven years. \nI enjoying helping you develop good sequencing in the painting process. Typically we simplify new and age-old painting concepts with short demonstrations and handouts and a bit of levity. I offer information on form\, light\, composition\, values\, atmospheric perspective\, color mixing\, media\, etc. I’m happy to oblige when painters request a special focus or demo. \nConnect the dots of composition\, color partnering\, and technique that fit your style. Paint using sources you choose\, preferably photographic\, and share your progress with others. In Studio 1 we all help each other. \nHaving been a full-time artist for decades\, I bring that learning to Studio 1. In eleven years here\, I’ve witnessed a lot of student success and feel proud of it. Beginners are most welcome. Our Tuesday studio is a warm place—we have fun\, we encourage each other\, and the final class is part paint session\, part festival–we celebrate with a showing of finished work and pieces in progress while enjoying scrumptious things to eat and drink. \nI’ve exhibited in the U.S. and Italy\, galleries\, museum shows\, etc. I show both abstract and representational art\, and offer painted silkwear. See my pieces in Gateway and Creekside and at annageorgeartist.com and at annageorgeonline.com. Ask about news on upcoming show of my work nearby. \nI hope you\, too\, will look forward to Tuesday afternoons\, when for a few fine hours\, we let go of the outer world. Beginners may request a materials list and a consult if desired\, plus guidance on choosing quality materials. Reach me at 925 783 9000 with questions/enrollment needs. Enroll well ahead of the start date\, please. See you in November!

SUMMARY:Paints + Papers + Prints with Anna George__ Nov 1 - Dec 13__ Wed  10am - 1pm__ Studio 2
DESCRIPTION:Paints  +  Papers  +  Prints \nAnna George\n \nNov 1 – Dec 13        6 classes\, no class on 11/22\n\n\n$180 members   $200 for non members or non residents      \nWed  10am – 1pm            Studio 2     \n\n  \nIt’s good to invent and play and relax into light adventure as surfaces transform in ways that are both planned and unexpected. I help you combine\, layer\, design and build richness. Following simple principles of composition to make each move with confidence\, we’ll simply add one step to the next to build. You are bringing with you the finest ingredient–your imagination. In Studio 2 our art-making is genuinely fun; gelli printing can be a delightful series component if the class wishes. \n“Paints ~ Papers ~ Prints” allows us to complete several pieces. No experience necessary. Guided projects at the outset involve working on boards\, paper\, or canvas and selecting from an assortment of ingredients. Members may utilize their own materials\, or if preferred\, arrange to use materials I provide. \nCollect interesting papers\, pages and found materials which resonate\, and the odd tool to work them\, and I’lI offer you techniques which complement your intention and style. Some tools and adhesives for layering are provided. Go for simplicity or build depth and dimension—the choices are endless and results are often exciting. \nI enjoy sharing what I love. After being a full-time artist for decades which included a successful history of custom work for clients\, I am happy to be in my 11th year of teaching here. I often feel proud of my students’ growth. Studio 2 is our haven\, a warm place where we uplift each other as we learn. In our final class we celebrate with a group showing of finished work and pieces in progress and a little repast. \nI’ve exhibited in the US and Italy\, galleries\, museum shows\, etc. I show both abstract and representational art\, and I paint on silk. See my pieces in Gateway and Creekside and at annageorgeartist.com and at annageorgeonline.com. Ask about news of upcoming shows of my work nearby. \nI offer on request a suggested materials list and guidance on choosing materials. Reach me at 925 783 9000 with questions/enrollment needs. Registration must be completed on the website in advance. Thanks for joining me. See you in November! No class 11/22. \n

SUMMARY:Landscapes from Photographs with Carol Tarzier__starting Nov 3rd\, Fridays 12:30-4:30__Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Landscapes from Photographs with Carol Tarzier\n\nNovember 3rd through December 15th\, skipping the Friday of Thanksgiving week\nLocated in Studio One __6 Classes\nFridays 12:30 – 4:30\n\n“Landscapes from Photographs” is about using photographs to create fresh and lively landscapes with the energy and color of plein air work. The series covers color mixing and creating color tones with a limited palette of three primary colors.   The class begins with materials and equipment that make painting fun\, and with designing the value structure in monochrome.   It moves to color mixing using and atmospheric perspective – creating depth using soft edges\, mixed muted tones\, and soft grays.   Students will use saturation to create space\, with bright colors in the foreground. \n  \nThe class moves on to colors for specific effects\, for example color changes in the sky as it moves toward the horizon\, color changes on a flat plane to make it recede into the distance\, and which colors create a dynamic foreground. Time permitting\, the class will cover transparency: how to make water look transparent\, how to paint waves\, and painting reflections. \n  \nStudents bring their landscape photos to each class\, on a tablet or printed photos.  Oil and acrylic painters of all levels welcome. Class demonstrations are in oil. Acrylic instruction is individual. Oil painters please use odorless thinner only. \nCarol Tarzier has taught painting for many years at the Academy of Art University.  Her paintings have been represented in national shows and museums\, including the Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery\, the Haggin Museum\, Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition and at the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show. \n  \nThe class is limited to 20 students\, and pre-enrollment is required.  For questions\, email Carol Tarzier at tarzier@tarzier.com.   View examples of Tarzier’s work at www.tarzier.com or https://www.facebook.com/CarolTarzierFineArt.
