DESCRIPTION:“En Plein Aire” Painting Outdoor \nSeptember 4- October 9\, 2023   Mondays 10:00-12:30 (6 sessions) \n  \nThe plain air class taught by Afsaneh Michaels at Rossmoor Art Association (RAA) continues outdoors. Student artists will paint directly onto canvas or paper using a medium of their choice (students must be comfortable and familiar with their own medium). Students will learn how to frame a painting from an outdoor scene\, how to capture shadows\, how to paint trees\, architecture\, water\, light\, color and other landscape elements. The course will be held outdoors. Long\, warm days provide plenty of daylight hours to work in my studio between hikes in the foothills\, working in the garden and excursions to the coast. These activities always awaken my artistic muse and inspire me to paint. Creativity just seems to flow in abundance during the summer months. \nIf you are the type of person who feels the excitement and joy of creating in the warm months of summer\, the Rossmoor Art Association is offering a class on Thursday Afternoons designed for you. This class focuses on teaching people the fundamentals of design and composition in watercolor painting and encourages people to explore their own creativity. This is a fun class that encourages the freedom of expression while developing your design skills in a fun and relaxing environment. Subject matter will be at the discretion of the students based on class themes. \nThis watercolor painting class will be held at the Rossmoor Activities Center\, Painting Studio 1 on Thursday Afternoons from 12:30pm to 3:00pm. This 10 week class will run from July 13th to Sept 14th at a cost of $135. For Non-Rossmoor Residents the class fee is $155. Priority will be given to Rossmoor Residents. You will learn to draw branches\, leaves\, small flowers\, fruits or vegetables and birds.  Students of all levels are welcome. \nWe will use pencil\, charcoal\, colored pencils\, or pastels\, and watercolor combined with pencil. Emphasis is on drawing from real specimens and not necessarily working from photos. Small things are brought into the studio or your home as models. \nThis course will focus on learning about line weight\, form\, shading and composition and making lively\, interesting and beautiful drawings. A wide range of mediums are introduced as part of the class. Demos are part of most classes and the instructor works with every student individually as well. \nPlease come with your sketchbook and pencils (dark or colored) and plan to have fun. SUMMARY:Figure Workshop Open Lab/ independent work/ multi-media/ Studio 2/ On Hold/1-4pm Tuesdays
DESCRIPTION:Studio 2\nMulti-Media Figure Lab\nThe Figure Lab needs to be on hold for the next several weeks\, due to the scarcity of both models and available space during the remodel. \nWe will open up the registration and the class again as soon as possible! \n  \nTuesdays 1-4 pm\n\nThere may be disruptions of classes in the next few months at Rossmoor due to the remodel of the studios. We hope to be able to make up for any cancelled class days or provide an alternate location. We will try our best to keep you informed.\n\nThe Multi-Media Figure Lab is an uninstructed workshop with a costumed model for Portrait or Figure work\, every Tuesday 1-4 pm. Students work independently from the model\, with an optional group discussion about the work at the end of each session.  Models are hired through the Bay Area Models Guild and the workshop charge covers the model fee.  A monitor will set up the lighting and pose each session.  Sessions feature one long pose\, with possible twenty minutes of gestures to start each session.  All media – watercolor\, acrylic\, charcoal\, pastels\, and oil paint – are welcome. No volatile thinners\, please.  The workshop takes place in Studio Two.\n\nThe Figure Lab Workshop discount fee is $100 for 5 sessions ($120. for Guests).   If you use up your 5 classes and time allows in the session\, you may purchase another five from the Monitor. Also available: Drop-in fee is $25.\, write your check to RAA and give to the class monitor.\n

We hope to be able to make up for any cancelled class days or provide an alternate location. We will try our best to keep you informed.\n\nThe Multi-Media Figure Lab is an uninstructed workshop with a costumed model for Portrait or Figure work\, every Tuesday 1-4 pm. Students work independently from the model\, with an optional group discussion about the work at the end of each session.  Models are hired through the Bay Area Models Guild and the workshop charge covers the model fee.  A monitor will set up the lighting and pose each session.  Sessions feature one long pose\, with possible twenty minutes of gestures to start each session.  All media – watercolor\, acrylic\, charcoal\, pastels\, and oil paint – are welcome. Greet summer with newness on surfaces that transform in ways that are both planned and unexpected. I help you combine\, layer\, design and build richness. We’ll follow simple principles of composition to make each move with confidence. Simply play. You are bringing with you the finest ingredient–your imagination. We’ll no doubt have fun. \n“Paints & Papers”  allows students to complete several pieces. No experience necessary. Guided projects at the outset involve working on paper\, boards or canvas and selecting from an assortment of ingredients. Members may utilize their own materials\, or if preferred\, use materials provided by the instructor. \nCollect interesting papers\, pages and found materials which resonate\, and the odd tool to work them\, as I offer you techniques which complement you intention and style. Whether you’re a beginner or hold an MFA\, we take a fresh look together at fundamentals. My style is to offer you constant support at your easels\, where you are painting what you love. \nAre you a brand-new artist? Are you embarking on a new painting or revisiting a piece? Whether abstract or representational\, work your individual style in oils or acrylics. Try fresh ideas. Skirt common pitfalls in this convivial class. \nI intend to help you develop a path with good sequencing in the painting process. I like to simplify new and age-old painting concepts with short demonstrations and handouts and a bit of levity. Typically I offer information on form\, light\, composition\, values\, atmospheric perspective\, color mixing\, media\, etc. I am happy to oblige when painters request a special focus or demo. \nConnect the dots of composition\, color partnering\, and technique that fit your style. Paint using sources you choose\, preferably photographic\, and benefit from sharing your process with others. We’ll no doubt have fun. \n“Paints & Papers”  allows students to complete several pieces. No experience necessary. Guided projects at the outset involve working on paper\, boards or canvas and selecting from an assortment of ingredients. DESCRIPTION:Studio 2\nMulti-Media Figure Lab\nThe Figure Lab needs to be on hold for the next several weeks\, due to the scarcity of both models and available space during the remodel. \nWe will open up the registration and the class again as soon as possible! \n  \nTuesdays 1-4 pm\n\nThere may be disruptions of classes in the next few months at Rossmoor due to the remodel of the studios. We hope to be able to make up for any cancelled class days or provide an alternate location. We will try our best to keep you informed.\n\nThe Multi-Media Figure Lab is an uninstructed workshop with a costumed model for Portrait or Figure work\, every Tuesday 1-4 pm. Students work independently from the model\, with an optional group discussion about the work at the end of each session.  Models are hired through the Bay Area Models Guild and the workshop charge covers the model fee.  A monitor will set up the lighting and pose each session.  Sessions feature one long pose\, with possible twenty minutes of gestures to start each session.  All media – watercolor\, acrylic\, charcoal\, pastels\, and oil paint – are welcome. No volatile thinners\, please.  The workshop takes place in Studio Two.\n\nThe Figure Lab Workshop discount fee is $100 for 5 sessions ($120. for Guests).   If you use up your 5 classes and time allows in the session\, you may purchase another five from the Monitor. Also available: Drop-in fee is $25.\, write your check to RAA and give to the class monitor.\n
