DESCRIPTION:Intermediate/Advanced\nWatercolor Painting\nFall 2024\nRonald Pratt \nGateway Complex\, Painting Studio 1 \nWhen the long days of summer start to shorten and there is a little nip in the air I know autumn is fast approaching. This is one of my favorite times of the year to paint because it allows me to expand my color palette. To my usual blues and greens of summer I can now add the brilliant colors of fall. This color palette is vibrant and exciting and inspires me to paint. \nIf you are like me and find autumn colors inspiring\, come paint with like-minded people on Thursday Afternoons in a relaxing social atmosphere at the RAA art studio. This class is designed to focus on composition and design by challenging the more experienced painters to expand their painting abilities and compositional skills. Innovation and expression will be the main theme. Class projects will be given to encourage creative thinking and expression thru the use of student chosen subject matter. The class is designed to push the student while encouraging an atmosphere of fun and exploration. \nThe Rossmoor Art Association is offering this watercolor painting class this fall at the Rossmoor Activities Center\, Painting Studio 1 on Thursday Afternoon from 12:30pm to 3 pm. SUMMARY:Beginning Watercolor & Continuing Acrylics/Oils with Anna George - Sept 10 to Oct 29 - Tuesday 1-4 - Studio1
DESCRIPTION:Beginning Watercolor & Continuing Acrylics/Oils with Anna George \nTuesday afternoons 1-4 \nSept 10 – October 29 \n8 weeks \nStudio 1 \n$165/185 \nMax spaces 16 \nFor some there is study\, for others play\, and for others magic. These combine into a treat for oneself\, a chance to enjoy color and creativity and camaraderie. Anna George welcomes it all in a hybrid class aimed to help beginning watercolorists start off well and keep everyone painting. \nOur newly renovated Studio 1 has wonderful ambient daylight. Open a paintbox and let ideas take shape.  I offer you constant support at your table. Choose to paint what you love. Whether you’re a beginner or hold an MFA\, we all along take a fresh look at important painting fundamentals. As the acrylics/oils members will tell you\, we have fun. All will benefit from this hybrid class. \nAre you starting a new watercolor pursuit? Materials truly matter. I’ll guide you as you take steps to learn technique\, incorporate interesting composition\, and experiment\, whether abstract or representational. As you develop your painting you’ll learn to skirt common pitfalls in this convivial class that has run for thirteen years. \nI enjoy offering good sequencing in the painting process. We simplify new and age-old painting concepts using demonstrations\, handouts\, and one-on-one. Classes address values\, form\, light\, composition\, atmospheric perspective\, color mixing and placement\, etc. When painters request a special focus or demo I’m happy to oblige. \nYou choose source material; I recommend an 8×10 photograph. In the studio we share as we go\, support each other\, and enjoy some levity\, each at our own pace. \nHaving been an artist for decades\, I grew to be self-supporting\, and bring the extent of that experience to classes. I’ve witnessed a lot of success and feel proud of my students’ growth. We encourage each other\, and the final class is all about that–our own little art festival\, where we show our work and savor scrumptious bites. \nOn Tuesday afternoons let go of the outer world and immerse. Beginners please get in touch for a materials list plus guidance choosing quality materials. Reach me at 925 783 9000 with questions/enrollment needs. Rossmoor residents tart by becoming an RAA member ($10) and then enroll at rossmoorart.com. Non Members can register as guests online also. Best to do this well ahead of the start date. \nAfter exhibiting in the U.S. and Italy in galleries\, museum shows\, etc.\, I show abstract and representational work online and at various venues. I offer painted silkwear here in November. See my pieces locally and at annageorgeartist.com and at annageorgeonline.com. Ask about a current show of my work nearby and see the Tuscany diptych above the interior fireplace at Creekside Grill. Welcome to our September class!

SUMMARY:Landscapes from Photographs with Carol Tarzier _ Fridays _ Oct 4th _ Dec 20th _ 12:30- 4:30 _Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Landscape from Photographs” is about using photographs to create fresh and lively landscapes with the energy and color of Plein Air work. The series covers color mixing and creating color tones with a limited palette of three primary colors.   The class begins with materials and equipment that make painting fun\, and with designing the value structure in monochrome.   It moves to color mixing using atmospheric perspective – creating depth using soft edges\, muted tones\, and soft grays.  Students will use saturation to create space\, with bright colors in the foreground.  The class discusses colors for specific effects\, for example color changes in the sky as it moves toward the horizon\, how to make a flat plane recede into the distance\, and which colors create a dynamic foreground.  Time permitting\, the class will cover transparency: how to make water look transparent\, how to paint waves\, and painting reflections. \nStudents bring their landscape photos to each class\, on a tablet or printed photos.  Oil and acrylic painters of all levels welcome. Class demonstrations are in oil. Acrylic instruction is individual. Oil painters please use odorless thinner only. \nCarol Tarzier has taught painting for many years at the Academy of Art University.  Her paintings have been represented in national shows and museums\, including the Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery\, the Haggin Museum\, Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition and at the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show. \n  \nThe class is limited to 20 students\, and pre-enrollment is required.  Tuition for the ten 4-hour sessions is $200. for members\, 220. for guests For questions and enrollment\, email Carol Tarzier at tarzier@tarzier.com.   View examples of Tarzier’s work at www.tarzier.com or \nhttps://www.facebook.com/CarolTarzierFineArt \nSupplies are suggested. SUMMARY:Nature Drawing with Afsaneh Michaels_ Sept 4 - Oct 15 _ Wednesdays_  9:00-12:00_ Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Nature Drawing with Afsaneh Michaels\n \nSeptember 4 – October 15 \, 2024  (seven weeks) \nWednesdays  9:00-12:00 \nStudio 1 \n  \nNature drawing has a way of bringing your body and soul in sync with nature and helps you stay in the calm and quiet of the moment. Drawing helps you concentrate your mind and helps you see the world in a new way. Drawing is the kind of art practice that you can bring into your home\, on vacation\, outdoors with friends\, anywhere you wish with just a small sketchbook and some pencils. \nIn this class we learn the fundamentals of visual thinking and drawing in a detailed and methodical way over several weeks with a lot practice and attention from the instructor. You will learn about form\, shading\, line weight\, and composition and make lively\, interesting and beautiful drawings. A wide range of materials and mediums are introduced slowly in the class with demos. \nIn my classes we work together in a cohesive environment where you get to see and appreciate a variety of art and inspire each other. You draw as beginners\, intermediate students\, and more experienced students all in one class\, each group working on material appropriate to their group\, overlaps are encouraged among the various levels. \nBeginners learn the basics of form\, line and value/shading and learn to draw branches\, leaves\, small flowers\, fruits or vegetable\, and an animal\, bird or insect. At the end of class you’ll have at least one drawing with three or four components in it. \nIntermediate students draw more complex scenery or a still life with natural elements in it\, and learn to use color (optional) with colored pencils\, pastels\, or watercolor. This group produces several drawings\, some in color and some in graphite or charcoal pencil. \nMore advanced students work with scale\, perspective\, tonal variation and more detail and color and scale. A recent group of students composed a small garden drawing with several components. \nWe will use pencils\, charcoal\, colored pencils\, pens\, or pastels and to lesser extent watercolor ( always combined with pencils or pens). Great emphasis is on drawing real specimens and not necessarily working from photos. Small things are brought in to the studio or from your home as models. \nPlease come with your materials or at least a sketchbook and some pencils to the first class and learn about materials then. \n  \nInstructor: Afsaneh Michaels.   AfsanehAm@gmail.com \nDates: September 4- October 17\, 2024 \nWednesdays: 9:00- 12:00 \nClass Fee: $205.00 Members.   $225.00 Non-members \nPlace: studio 1 \nNumber of students: 17 \nMaterials: Sketchbook: 93-120 Ibs. weight of your choice.

SUMMARY:Lecture-“Asian Paintings"-1 pm Peacock Hall
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Narrative: \n“Asian Paintings:  From the Mediterranean to the Pacific ”\n\n\nThe Rossmoor Art Association in collaboration with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco will present an art talk and slide presentation on a selection of the varied styles of Asian painting. \nAsia is the world’s largest continent\, the birthplace of a vast number of independent cultures\, ethnic groups\, environments and religions and thousands and thousands years of history\, the site of many of the first civilizations.  \nIt stretches from the Turkish straits in the Middle East (West Asia)\, to the “stans” of Central Asia\, up to the Arctic Ocean to the north\, Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia to the south\, to China\, Korea\, and Japan across the east to the Pacific Ocean.  \nThough it would be difficult to capture the diversity and complexity and richness of all the painting styles on the continent\, this presentation gives a broad overview of some of the best known artistic styles in painting.    \nThe slide images include Japanese gold screens\, Chinese brush paintings – both traditional and modern\,\, Indian Mughal paintings\, Tibetan mandala paintings\, Persian miniatures\, Japanese woodblock prints\, calligraphy\, and contemporary paintings which draw on these traditions.   \nThis talk will be given by docent Linda Lei from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Linda served as Chair of the Docent Council at the Asian Art Museum from 2020 to 2022. During her tenure\, she collaborated closely with museum staff to adapt to a fully online learning environment in addition to leading in-person tours. Previously\, Linda was Co-Chair of the Docent Training Program and President of the Society for Asian Art. \n————————————————-
