SUMMARY:“What If? Why Not?! -- Mixing Media/Mixing Methods” with Anna George --Studio 2--starts 3/29 9:30-12:30 Wednesdays
DESCRIPTION:“What If? Why Not?! — Mixing Media/Mixing Methods” with Anna George \nRelax into light adventure with this fun\, evolving class series in Studio One. Will Spring inspire innovative work where both common and uncommon materials unpredictably mix? Find out in these seven weeks of combining and repurposing materials\, where each artist integrates simple principles of composition and addresses each new surface with both a conventional and an unconventional eye. Build a piece with mementos or simply play. “The finest ingredient ever is the imagination\,” notes instructor\, Anna George\, “and play is premium.” \n  \nWhat if? Why not?!  allows everyone to complete several pieces. No experience is necessary. Guided projects at the outset involve working on boards\, paper\, and canvas and selecting from an assortment of provided ingredients. Members then utilize their own materials\, or if preferred\, continue with materials provided by the instructor at cost. \n  \nCollect the finest found materials–thread\, mesh\, music sheets\, straw\, bits of nature\, foils\, shavings\, tissue papers\, string\, the odd finds. Tools and adhesives for assembling are provided. Even simple pen marks over a sweeping swath of paint work magic\, just as cut paper shapes land on a smooth ground—the choices are endless. \nMaterials fees for the first three weeks is $23; for seven weeks\, $52 remitted separately to Anna George. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:"Escapades in Collage with Gelli Plate Prints" 3 day Workshop with Anna George -- Studio 2 -- Fridays 1-4pm Starts 3/31
DESCRIPTION:Escapades in Collage with Gelli Plate Prints \nGet ready for twists and turns in artist\, Anna George’s mixed media collage workshop\, meeting Friday afternoons in Studio Two on March 31\, April 7\, and April 14th. \nBegin your adventure making art paper and fine art collage pieces using acrylic paints provided by artist\, Anna George. The sky is the limit in this series of three sessions. Enjoy demonstrations each session. No experience is necessary. \nWe begin with a fun look at elements that constitute a print\, a collage\, and mixed media. The class will focus on paint-to-paper monoprints\, using techniques like negative imaging where light and dark are reversed\, multiple passes\, sectioning\, and color combining that will allow for playful experiment and gorgeous results. \nA “Gelli” plate is a rectangle about a half inch thick with springy resilience akin to firm gelatin. It has the ability to retain on its smooth surface acrylic color we apply in layers. The colors then  release in various ways. The results are delightful and can be unpredictable in welcome ways. \nLearn to arrange and integrate color and texture to achieve richness in a range of results from spare and simple to multi-layered. We will explore as we wish–abstract\, representational\, and all that’s in between. Tuition is $170 for three sessions and includes materials\, plus a closing review with refreshments. Nonresidents fee is 190. \nParticipants will have use of an 8” x 10” gel plate provided by the instructor for large or small work. Provided each week are initial practice materials and high-quality materials\, including copy print paper\, rice paper\, card stock\, plus a few exotic papers\, numerous stencils\, inks\, and large stamps\, plus surprises. Each may bring texture-producing ingredients along with their own scissors\, gloves\, and possibly an apron or smock. Quality papers from high end magazines and books can make good starting points. \n

SUMMARY:Painting Landscapes from Photos with Carol Tarzier __ (Jan 6) Fridays 12:30-4:30 Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:*Studio1* \nLandscapes from Photographs \n“Landscapes from Photographs” is about using photographs to create fresh and lively landscapes with the energy and color of plein air work. The series covers color mixing and creating color tones with a limited palette of three primary colors.   The class begins with materials and equipment that make painting fun\, and with designing the value structure in monochrome.   It moves to color mixing using and atmospheric perspective – creating depth using soft edges\, mixed muted tones\, and soft grays.   Students will use saturation to create space\, with bright colors in the foreground. \n  \nThe class moves on to colors for specific effects\, for example color changes in the sky as it moves toward the horizon\, color changes on a flat plane to make it recede into the distance\, and which colors create a dynamic foreground. Time permitting\, the class will cover transparency: how to make water look transparent\, how to paint waves\, and painting reflections. \n  \nStudents bring their landscape photos to each class\, on a tablet or printed photos.  Oil and acrylic painters of all levels welcome. Class demonstrations are in oil. Acrylic instruction is individual. Oil painters please use odorless thinner only. \nCarol Tarzier has taught painting for many years at the Academy of Art University.  Her paintings have been represented in national shows and museums\, including the Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery\, the Haggin Museum\, Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition and at the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show. \n  \nThe class is limited to 20 students\, and pre-enrollment is required.  For questions\, email Carol Tarzier at tarzier@tarzier.com.   View examples of Tarzier’s work at www.tarzier.com or https://www.facebook.com/CarolTarzierFineArt.
