SUMMARY:Figure Lab_ Monitor Posed and Lighted_ Life or Costumed_ Choice of Medium_ Weds 1-4 pm _Oct 22nd - Dec 10_ No Teacher
DESCRIPTION:Figure Lab. Wednesday 1-4 pm October 22nd – December 10. 6 sessions. Class skips 11/5\, 11/26 (Thanksgiving week). Cost $90 for Rossmoor residents\, $120 for non-members and non-residents\, for the six sessions. Carol Tarzier is the Monitor for most sessions. \nThe Figure Lab is a wonderful art experience where a professional model is employed and posed with lighting. Participants have the opportunity to draw or paint from a life model in a medium of their choice. There is no instruction.\nFigure and Portrait painting is one of the oldest disciplines\, and is some of the best practice out there – somewhat like Plein Air but from a model indoors. Every art school requires drawing the figure from life in the curriculum.  As you work on your piece\, on the breaks\, walk around and look at different interpretations of the model. The figure lab is a great accompaniment to the Portrait from Photographs class; the classes develop the same skill sets – drawing\, mixing skin tones\, identifying shadow shapes.  All media are welcome – charcoal\, acrylic\, oil paint\, pastels\, mixed.

SUMMARY:Landscape from Photographs with Carol Tarzier_ Fridays_ Oct 24th - Dec 12th_ 12:30 – 4:30 pm in Studio 1
DESCRIPTION:Landscapes from Photographs with Carol Tarzier \n Bay Area artist Carol Tarzier is offering “Landscape from Photographs.” \n Class meets on Fridays October 24th – December 12th from 12:30 – 4:30 pm in Studio One.  Tuition for the six 4-hour sessions is $130 for members\, $150 for non members. You must live in Rossmoor to become a member.   Every other class features a demonstration and group discussion; the last class includes a final critique. \n“Landscape from Photographs” is about using photographs to create fresh and lively landscapes with the energy and color of Plein Air work.  The series covers color mixing and creating color tones with a limited palette of three primary colors.   The class begins with materials and equipment that make painting fun\, and with designing the value structure in monochrome.   It moves to color mixing using and atmospheric perspective – creating depth using soft edges\, mixed muted tones\, and soft grays.   Students will use saturation to create space\, with bright colors in the foreground. \nThe class moves on to colors for specific effects\, for example color changes in the sky as it moves toward the horizon\, color changes on a flat plane to make it recede into the distance\, and which colors create a dynamic foreground.  Time permitting\, the class will cover transparency:  how to make water look transparent\, how to paint waves\, and painting reflections. \nStudents bring their landscape photos to each class\, on a tablet or printed photos.  Oil and acrylic painters of all levels welcome. Class demonstrations are in oil.  Acrylic instruction is individual.  The class emphasizes using non-toxic mediums\, and oil painters please use odorless thinner only. \n    Carol Tarzier has taught painting for many years at the Academy of Art University.  Her paintings have been represented in national shows and museums\, including the Salon International at the Greenhouse Gallery\, the Haggin Museum\, Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition and at the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Show.  Carol is represented by Studio Gallery in San Francisco and MK Contemporary in Santa Cruz. \nFor questions\, email carol@tarzier.com.   View examples of Tarzier’s work at www.tarzier.com or https://www.facebook.com/CarolTarzierFineArt.

SUMMARY:Acrylic Painting_ All Levels_ Marcy Wheeler_ Thursdays 2:30- 5pm_ November 13 to December 18_ Studio 2
DESCRIPTION:Wheeler’s style is warm and friendly. She focuses on individual instruction\, group discussion and occasional class demonstrations. Students learn the quick and creative qualities of acrylic paints and mediums and how to turn acrylic paints into a flexible and luscious way to paint. If you are already an Acrylic Painter\, deepen your practice and add to your tool belt! \nWheeler encourages students to try new tools\, explore new ways of working and move toward their own style. She gives the encouragement needed to stay with a painting until it is done\, perhaps exceeding the class members expectations. And she helps some students learn how to stop when it is finished! It is an engaging activity\, and time flies. \n“Acrylic paints are amazing!  My job is to teach you to become a better painter\, with a style that is your own\, with the tools you need. \nJoin us and learn about the mediums that are essential to a rich and deep acrylic painting.” \nYou may be a beginner\, intermediate or advanced artist. Enroll in this class and if you like it\, stay in the class and keep growing. Group discussion is helpful\, and your fellow painters grow to understand your process. Most days\, we look at our work together at the end of class. This is optional if you need to get home!  If you are a true beginner\, also check out my Friday Magic of Acrylics class\, but either one works. \nThis is a 5 session class. No class on Thanksgiving week. The class is on Thursdays 2:30-5 pm. in Studio 2. You can make up missed classes in my Friday morning class in studio 2 at 9:30 to noon. \nJust let me know. Make ups should be within the current class sessions. Check out the beginning supply list in the blue section of this listing. \n

Learning continues with individual guidance from Marcy\, as usual. We often share our work at the end of the class and learn more about our own work from the other class members. \nThere is a Blick’s store at 5301 Broadway in Oakland. You can order from DickBlick.com\, or on Amazon.com.
