Drawing From Nature with Afsaneh Michaels

January 10 -February 14,  2024

Wednesdays 9:30-12:00, Studio 1

Nature drawing has a way of bringing your body and soul in sync with nature and helps you get lost in the calm and quiet of the moment. Drawing helps you concentrate your mind and gives you an understanding of the world like no other art. In this class you are introduced or continue to deepen your drawing practice. Beginners learn to draw branches, leaves, small flowers, fruits, vegetables, and birds.  Intermediate student artists draw more complex scenery, perhaps add color. More advanced students work with scale, perspective, and more detail as well as color.

In this way of drawing, you learn age-old drawing methods in a detailed and methodical way. You will learn about, form, shading,  line weight and composition and make lively, interesting, and beautiful drawings. A wide range of mediums are introduced as part of the class in demos. The instructor works closely with every individual.

We will use pencil, charcoal, colored pencils, or pastels, and to a lesser extent watercolor combined with pencil. Emphasis is on drawing from real specimens and not necessarily working from photos. Small things are brought into the studio or into your home as models.

Please come with your sketchbook and pencils (dark or colored) and plan to have fun. A basic kit of materials can be purchased from the instructor by prior (at least a week ahead) arrangement.  Studio 1 is the place to meet, some days we might move to studio 2 if there is remodeling work going on in studio 1.
