Painting the Natural World and Abstraction

Afsaneh Michaels

January 9 – February 13, 2024

Tuesday 9:30-12:00  Studio 1

In this course you will learn to draw and paint objects brought into the studio from nature placed within still-life setup; the use of photographs will be allowed to some extent.  Beginning students and intermediate students and the more advanced students work in the same class. It is recommended that students who are new to art practice take Afsaneh’s natural world drawing class first to get familiar with the fundamentals of drawing which is the basis of painting as well.

This class is similar to natural world drawing class in that it lays out detailed methods in painting and color, while taking color into the mix more deeply. You will learn about form, line weight, shading, composition and an overall handling of the picture space and make lively, interesting and beautiful paintings. A variety of color mediums (including acrylics, oils, or water soluble oil colors, oil pastels etc.) can be used on paper as well as on canvas or board.

This class will also include some basic understanding and techniques of abstraction while studying the perception and rendering of the picture space in different contexts. Some students may choose to follow this route and make more abstract paintings.

Come with your existing setup with colors, brushes, pencils, pastels and other tools plus your sketchbook and a canvas paper pad. The first class will include a discussion of materials and supports (canvas, paper or boards). For questions please email the instructor.
