Lecture-“Asian Paintings”-1 pm Peacock Hall

October 2, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Lecture Narrative:
“Asian Paintings:  From the Mediterranean to the Pacific ”

The Rossmoor Art Association in collaboration with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco will present an art talk and slide presentation on a selection of the varied styles of Asian painting.

Asia is the world’s largest continent, the birthplace of a vast number of independent cultures, ethnic groups, environments and religions and thousands and thousands years of history, the site of many of the first civilizations.

It stretches from the Turkish straits in the Middle East (West Asia), to the “stans” of Central Asia, up to the Arctic Ocean to the north, Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia to the south, to China, Korea, and Japan across the east to the Pacific Ocean.

Though it would be difficult to capture the diversity and complexity and richness of all the painting styles on the continent, this presentation gives a broad overview of some of the best known artistic styles in painting.

The slide images include Japanese gold screens, Chinese brush paintings – both traditional and modern,, Indian Mughal paintings, Tibetan mandala paintings, Persian miniatures, Japanese woodblock prints, calligraphy, and contemporary paintings which draw on these traditions.

This talk will be given by docent Linda Lei from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. Linda served as Chair of the Docent Council at the Asian Art Museum from 2020 to 2022. During her tenure, she collaborated closely with museum staff to adapt to a fully online learning environment in addition to leading in-person tours. Previously, Linda was Co-Chair of the Docent Training Program and President of the Society for Asian Art.
